Avoiding the pitfalls
Historic mine workings, mine entries and mineral extraction sites continue to be problematic for development in areas of the UK.
Our geotechnical and geoenvironmental team have a wealth of experience in mining investigation, assessment and design of mitigation measures to overcome these challenges.
Initially, our specialist teams carry out a mining risk assessment of the available information to quantify the risk. Often, no further action is required beyond this as the risk to the development or structure proves to be negligible. However, in instances where this isn’t the case our experts will design and supervise an intrusive ground investigation to assess the nature, condition and extent of any mine workings and entries.
We routinely provide informed advice on the remediation and stabilisation of ground affected by historic mineral extraction, especially coal, to ensure key developments can go ahead as planned.
