Phase 2 of the Burwell BESS scheme involved the addition of approximately 30MW of extra storage capacity on an adjacent site, expanding the overall capability of the development.

Alan Wood & Partners (AWP) supported the scheme from planning through to implementation, with construction currently underway. Our team delivered a full civil and structural engineering design package, ensuring the project met stringent technical and environmental requirements.

Key elements of our involvement included:

Flood Risk Assessment & Planning Support: The site presented complex challenges due to its proximity to The Weirs watercourse. AWP undertook a detailed flood risk assessment to ensure resilience against predicted flood levels.

Drainage Design: We provided a comprehensive drainage strategy for the scheme, incorporating sustainable solutions to manage surface water effectively.

Fire Water Storage Assessment and Design: To meet safety and regulatory requirements, AWP designed fire water storage facilities tailored to the site’s operational needs.

Civil and Structural Engineering: Our scope covered geotechnical design, structural foundations for battery units and associated plant, transformer bunds, switch rooms, and site-wide surfacing. We also designed structural steel grillages to elevate critical equipment above flood levels, supporting safe installation and long-term performance.

Working directly for the EPC contractor, AWP ensured that all engineering solutions were delivered to programme and integrated seamlessly with the overall grid connection strategy.
