Principal Designers are required for construction projects that fall under the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015, and more recently under the Building Safety Act 2022.
Under the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015, the Principal Designer undertakes a critical role on domestic and commercial construction projects and leads in the planning, managing, monitoring and coordinating health and safety during the pre-construction phase of a development.
They play a pivotal role in the design phase and influence how risks to health and safety are managed during the entire project lifecycle; from inception, through to decommissioning.
Under the Building Safety Act 2022, the Principal Designer’s duties typically include coordinating the design to ensure all reasonable steps are taken to ensure compliance with the regulatory framework governing a construction project, usually the Building Regulations.
