On July 10, 1968, approximately two months worth of rain poured in less than two days.

  • 6,250 square kilometres were affected by torrential rainfall (over 100mm) in July and September 1968.
  • Area stretched from Hampshire and Sussex across Surrey, Kent and Essex.
  • Bristol experienced severe impacts, with eight lives lost and 3,000 properties flooded.
  • Many surrounding regions also affected by the flooding.
  • Most of Lewisham borough in London was submerged.
  • Town’s mayor used a dinghy to help evacuate residents.
  • The grounds of both of Bristol’s professional football clubs, Ashton Gate and Eastville were left underwater.
