Residential Development

Alan Wood and Partners

Alan Wood & Partners (AWP) was appointed by Vistry Partnerships Yorkshire to act as the Civil and Structural Engineers for a new residential development located in Grimsby.

Engineering and Design Factors

The development consists of 299 mixed tenure open-market and social housing.  The proposed residential development is located around an existing spine road, with (AWP) tasked to design adoptable surface and foul water systems that met the constraints of the existing drainage system. AWP ensured discharge rates stayed within allowable limits and designed flow control manholes at connection points, with attenuation provided in oversized pipes.

AWP also replaced a proposed solution involving cellular crates with an engineered system, keeping all stormwater storage within the adoptable drainage system, saving costs and reducing maintenance. For the foundations, traditional strip foundations were used on competent ground, while areas with a high-water table used Vibro Stone Columns for better bearing capacity.

Description of the Works

AWP was commissioned to carry out the Civil and Structural design for the entire development, including adoptable drainage and highways design, private drainage and externals design, foundations and structural design. This included working closely with statutory stakeholders to ensure that the highways and drainage design was in accordance with the relevant standards which resulted in obtaining swift Technical Approval.
