Extension to Glass Bottle Manufacturing Facility

Alan Wood and Partners

The extension to Encirc’s beverage filler and glass container manufacturing plant in Cheshire saw production capacity increase 40%.

Alan Wood & Partners (AWP) were commissioned to provide Project Management, Architecture, Civil and Structural design services and Principal Designer role under CDM, for this  192m long by 16m wide extension to existing glass bottle manufacturing facility to accommodate a new bottle production line.

Works included the design and construction of the new building extension, drainage and external works. The building is a steel framed clad structure built off piled foundations with the process line located on the first floor. Collaboration and coordination were key to the success of this project with AWP working closely with the Client and his Process Engineering Team.

Method of Procurement and Contract Type

Full design information was utilised to seek competitive tenders from select list. NEC4 Option A contract was utilised for the procurement and construction. The Client split the packages of works out into Civils, Steelwork and Cladding requiring AWP to manage 3 contracts under a Principal Contractor.

The Principal designer challenges included working safely on this active manufacturing site whilst the facility remained in full production. Liaison with the principal contractor to ensure safe working practices were adopted and co-ordination between principal contract and client was paramount to maintain a safe site whilst manufacturing and vehicle movements continued around the site.
