The project involved the refurbishment and modernisation of the existing Seclusion suite together with the creation of a Long-Term Seclusion (LTS) facility at Humber Centre, a medium secure mental health unit operated by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. The scheme was designed to provide a safe, secure and therapeutic environment that supports patient recovery while meeting the operational requirements of medium secure services.
Delivered within a live healthcare environment, the project required careful coordination with clinical teams, estates personnel and end users throughout the design and construction process. The refurbishment was developed in accordance with NHS guidance, Health Building Notes (HBNs), Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), Mental Health Act requirements and anti-ligature best practice.
Key elements of the scheme included the installation of specialist anti-ligature fixtures and fittings, enhanced patient observation facilities, robust impact-resistant finishes, improved infection control measures and upgraded mechanical and electrical services. Fire safety improvements, secure ventilation, access control systems and CCTV infrastructure were also incorporated to meet the specific demands of a secure mental health setting.
The completed facility provides modern accommodation that promotes patient dignity, safety and staff welfare, while supporting the clinical model of care and maintaining compliance with current NHS standards for seclusion, safety and staff welfare. Overall supporting the clinical model of care and maintaining compliance with current NHS standards for seclusion and long-term seclusion environments.
