The project involved the conversion and extension of a derelict barn and yard space.
The barn has seen successive changes over time, and this proposal was a continuation of earlier approved schemes, which aimed to restore the original elements of the building through removal of later additions. The site also fell within a local Conservation Area.
Alan Wood & Partners were commissioned to undertake a structural review of the main barn along with alterations to the floors/walls including the design of the supports to a cantilevering feature stone spiral stair and integral fire.
We designed the portal frame extensions (including large bi-folding doors, celestrial ceilings) along with their foundations. Alan Wood & Partners also undertook the design of the drainage and outdoor pool. A series of steel portal frames were designed for the main kitchen extension and external pool building / office complex. Alterations to the existing timber trusses within the main barn were undertaken in order to improve flexibility of the dwelling space.
The overall impression is a group of buildings, which would be typical of agricultural complexes through the region. The result is a striking new house widely admired across the county.
