South Cliff Gardens
The South Cliff Gardens site spans approximately 16 hectares and holds Grade II listed status. It comprises multiple structures, each individually recognised for their historical significance.
The restoration of South Cliff Gardens included the refurbishment of fourteen historic seating shelters, rejuvenation of the Italian Gardens, and conservation of Holbeck Clocktower, the Spa Tunnel, and surrounding pathways. These heritage works were complemented by improvements to the drainage system and the addition of new amenities, including a children’s play area, a community building that also serves as an operational depot, and modern toilet facilities.
Due to the site's Grade II listed status and coastal location, all works required listed building consent and the use of corrosion-resistant materials that preserved its historic character. Technical elements involved surveys, structural assessments, and remediation design. Restored shelters used traditional masonry and timber framing, while the new depot was constructed with a steel frame and timber cladding to blend with its surroundings.
This project won Second Prize at the European Garden Awards 2025.
