New Diabetes Centre

Alan Wood and Partners

A new diabetes and endocrinology outpatient centre for University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Hull was developed and built with a donation from Dr Allam, owner of Hull City Football Club.

It includes expanded diabetic eye screening facilities and a dedicated space for diabetic foot care. The bone densitometry service, which helps detect and manage bone conditions like osteoporosis, and performs over 5,000 bone scans each year, also has a base here.

Engineering and Design Factors

The project comprised of a new build, 3-storey, iconic steel framed building with an impressive atrium and roof garden including spaces for offices, consultation rooms, ward spaces and specialist testing rooms.

The project was made more challenging as the engineering had to not only ensure the building was fit for purpose in terms of functionality and meeting the standards for specialist equipment loading and dynamic requirements, but also incorporate the Client’s aesthetic aspirations including structural curves and cantilevers throughout the structure.

The structure consisted of a steel frame, composite concrete/steel floors, suspended concrete ground floor slab with piled foundations.
