The new 30m clear-spanning Highway Access Bridge and Access Road was created to connect Langsett Road North to a prestigious future 284 home development across the River Don, at Oughtibridge Mill, Sheffield.
Alan Wood & Partners (AWP) handled the structural design, development, and detailing of the bridge, piled abutments, and highway retaining walls. They worked closely with the main contractor from the start to completion and handover to the client. Since the new bridge and access road needed to meet adoptable standards, AWP managed all communication with Sheffield City Council, including handling variations to the Approval In Principle and securing necessary approvals. As the project was on the former Oughtibridge Paper Mill site, remediation work and additional ground testing were required as part of the redevelopment.
The steelwork and reinforced concrete design for the bridge deck, abutments, and retaining walls was carried out to meet LM1 and LM2 Eurocode traffic loads and vehicle impact standards. This included obtaining Approval in Principle and approvals from the Environment Agency. The scope also covered highway works, including S278/S38 design, as well as external works, with coordination between the local council and water authorities.
