Congleton War Memorial Hospital

As part of a major hospital expansion to enhance patient care and increase clinical capacity, a new volumetric modular extension was developed to provide additional treatment rooms, X‑ray facilities, and improved supporting spaces.

The building is positioned at the end of the existing hospital structure, with direct links into the current facilities, and accommodates multiple treatment rooms along with an X‑ray scanning suite. The design process included a dynamic footfall analysis of the floor plate to ensure that the limits set out in HTM 08 were not exceeded.

Alan Wood & Partners undertook the structural design of the modular building, which incorporates a vaulted reception area. The new structure is connected to the existing hospital through the current office spaces and is supported via traditional steel transfer structures. Lateral stability is achieved through a hybrid system combining portalised module end frames with braced bays. Each module is formed from two fully welded end frames and two cold‑formed steel chassis, ensuring strength, efficiency, and ease of installation.

We also included design works for the civil engineering aspects including drainage, foundations and external works.
