The Grammar School property, located on Brook Street in Grantham, was founded in 1528. The "Old School" building, facing Church Street, dates back to 1497. No’s. 1 and 2 Church Street, adjacent to the school, have 16th and 18th-century facades.
Most of the buildings are Grade I or Grade II listed. The renovation work included roof repairs and replacements, restoring lathe and plaster ceilings, strengthening the roof structure, and replacing dormer windows.
Alan Wood & Partners (AWP) worked closely with the client from the start, conducting initial surveys to inform budgets for a funding application under the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF). These surveys included full measured and structural surveys, which helped secure funding for refurbishing and replacing the roofs of the CIS building. Concurrently, outline planning drawings were prepared for Listed Building Approval. Once planning and funding were secured, AWP took on the roles of Project Managers, Contract Administrators, Structural Engineers, Architects, and Principal Designers, overseeing the project from design to construction. They managed the tendering process and appointed Lindum Construction as the contractor.
The complexity of the roofs, which were predominantly underdrawn, meant that additional surveys for structural and timber decay had to be conducted once the roofs were stripped to prevent delays. AWP's heritage engineers worked alongside timber decay experts to prepare reports for the Listed Building Officer, securing necessary approvals. Lindum's construction team simultaneously sourced materials for the next phase of work.
